Caroline Gordon is to marry her childhood sweetheart in just a few days. Her mother is busy taking care of every detail to be sure that the wedding is an event to rival any ever seen in their town. Unfortunately, as the wedding gets closer, and everyone else's plans get bigger, Caroline's wishes and dreams for her wedding seem to diminish. Her sister, Kitty, refuses to wear her bridesmaid dress, the caterer is inept, the wedding director is difficult and snobbish, the florist imperious, and the minister, appalled at Caroline's desire to update the vows to the 20th century, withdraws the church as the site for the ceremony. The final loathsome straw is when Mark informs Caroline that not only will his obnoxious best friend, Jerry, be part of the wedding, Mark has invited him to stay at Caroline's house. At every turn (or downturn, as it were), Caroline is admonished, "Caroline, it's not just your wedding." Finally, in a moment when Caroline has had enough of all the desires and demands of the others and feels Mark is not the respectful, loving husband she had thought he would be, she explodes: "Maybe it isn't only my wedding. Maybe its God's wedding and the community's wedding and your wedding and Mark's wedding. But it's partly my wedding. And I've cancelled my part." Nobody believes Caroline is serious about calling off the wedding and they continue with preparations. But as she sticks to her guns, they look at their own behavior and make some changes. Ultimately, everyone gathers in the Gordon home for the nuptials - everyone except Caroline. When the strains of Here Comes the Bride begin, will she?
